Does Your Church Actually Need a Mobile App?

Mobile apps for churches have become increasingly accessible. What once required a six-figure development budget is now available as part of a church management subscription. But just because you can have a church mobile app doesn't mean you should, at least not necessarily a standalone one.

The case for a church mobile app

Engagement data consistently shows that people check their phones many times per day but open email far less. Push notifications, available only through native apps, have dramatically higher open rates than emails or text messages. For time-sensitive communications like service reminders or urgent announcements, push notifications are genuinely more effective.

A well-designed church app also creates a single place for everything a member needs: sermon library, giving (straight into the church's own Stripe-connected bank account, with Gift Aid added in one tap), events, groups and prayer requests. Members don't need to know which URL to visit or which email list to check. It's all in one app they open regularly.

The case against (or for patience)

Download friction is real. Getting your congregation to download a new app requires sustained effort. If the app isn't significantly better than what they already use, including your website, email and existing WhatsApp groups, they won't make the switch.

Standalone apps that only do one thing, like just giving or just sermon streaming, rarely justify the download. A general-purpose church app that does everything has a better case.

Shared app vs. white-label
